This year, the Center for Improving Youth Justice (CIYJ) proudly recognizes exceptional young people with remarkable determination and vision for their future careers. The CIYJ Employment Matching Award is more than just financial support; it’s a testament to these young individuals’ potential and the brighter futures they are working tirelessly to create. This year, 14 young people from six facilities have been selected for this prestigious award, each with their own unique aspirations and goals.
Meet the 2024 CIYJ Employment Matching Award Winners:
Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex, Kansas Department of Corrections- Juvenile Services
- Kameron – Aspiring IT Professional
Kameron dreams of working in IT, where he can leverage his technical skills and passion for technology. As he puts it, “This award will allow me to focus more directly on my goals, rather than the amount these goals will cost.”
- Garrett – Future Welder
Garrett is eager to contribute to large-scale construction projects, hoping to earn a welding degree from Washburn Institute of Technology. “I like the idea of making the welds for a big company/building, then when I see that building, I know I did work that helped make it possible.”
- Kameron – Passionate Welder
Like Garrett, Kameron also sees a future in welding. “I have always enjoyed welding, I’m good at it and I know it’s a skill that will always be needed,” he says, confident in the value his craft will bring to the workforce.
Kenneth Rubenstein Juvenile Center, West Virginia Bureau of Juvenile Services
- Tristan – Radio and Television Enthusiast
Tristan’s dream of pursuing a career in radio, television or podcasting has been a lifelong passion. “This has been my dream since I was a kid,” he says. Winning this award has boosted his self-esteem, helping him to see that his hard work is paying off.
- Daris – Aspiring Business Manager
Daris has set his sights on earning a degree in Business Management, with the ultimate goal of owning his own company. “I’ve always seen my dad be so successful and I’ve made it my goal to be as or more successful than my father,” he shares.
- Riley – Future IT Innovator
With a love for video games and a knack for writing, Riley is drawn to software design and cybersecurity. “I also enjoy creating content for others to enjoy,” he explains, with plans to get certified in cybersecurity and work on community and open-source programs.
Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex – West Female, Kansas Department of Corrections- Juvenile Services
- Shanteyja – Aspiring Lawyer and CEO
Shanteyja’s dreams of becoming a lawyer and eventually a CEO have only intensified during her time in the juvenile system. “Coming to prison makes me want it more. I know there’s a lot of opportunities out there and it’s up to me to want them. I will keep chasing my dreams.”
- Sabrina – Future Occupational Therapist
Sabrina is passionate about helping others, especially those hoping to regain their independence after illness or injury. “My reasoning behind wanting to do Occupational Therapy is my want to help the elderly and children.”
- Kayla – Aspiring Esthetician
Kayla sees cosmetology as a way to help others feel confident and cared for. “Cosmetology to me is a way I can help build others up. I want them to feel confident and enjoy the time they get to spend pampering themselves.”
McLaughlin Youth Center, Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice
- Nasaveiair – Future Iron Welder
Nasaveiair dreams of becoming an iron welder, contributing to the construction of significant structures. “I want to pursue this career because I want to be a part of building big structures in America and around the world,” he says. His determination is reflected in his belief that an “unbreakable mindset” is key to success.
- Irauraq – Aspiring Pilot
The skies are the limit for Irauraq, who aims to become a pilot. “I aspire to this career in particular because it would allow me to see the world,” he says, looking forward to the opportunities that an aviation career will offer.
- Joshua – Future Psychologist
Joshua’s experiences have inspired him to pursue a career in psychology, with the goal of helping young people in similar situations to his own. “I want to help kids who are in the same or similar position to my own; I want to help them change their lives.”

- Ythean – Future Food Truck Owner and Mentor
Ythean has a passion for culinary arts and a desire to mentor other young people. “I want to be a mentor to help kids that are in the same position as me and help them better their futures,” he shares, with plans to open his own food truck.
Touchstone Community Facility, Washington Juvenile Justice and Rehabilitation Administration
- Alberto – Aspiring Commercial Driver
Alberto is working toward getting his commercial driver’s license (CDL) to explore the freedom that comes with driving for a living. “Getting my CDL provides me the opportunity to explore other places, states and areas as I work. I enjoy having freedom to choose how I work.”

Each of these young people has demonstrated exceptional resolve and ambition.
