In honor of Second Chance Month, the Center for Improving Youth Justice (CIYJ) holds Steps for Real Second Chances to spread awareness about justice-involved young people and their reentry necessities. So far, many great teams have joined our efforts in changing lives.
Ohio’s Cuyahoga Hill Juvenile Correctional Facility team has really stepped it up. Stepping Up Da Hill led by captain Tamika Glenn has creatively incorporated CIYJ’s Steps for Real Second Chances challenge into their daily routine. The team includes 11 adults joining together to raise awareness and donations to support young people leaving justice facilities and returning to their community.
For one, they hosted an outside consulting group that included a lengthy tour of the facility, which meant, “getting plenty of steps in..”, said Tamika. The tour was more than just walking—it was a chance to show off what they’ve built, the systems they’ve refined and the heart behind everything they do. It was a proud moment, and the team truly brought their A-game.
It’s not just happening in Cleveland, where the facility is located. Their team members have been active around the state, getting their steps in, any chance they get. Two staff members even snuck in some steps on a break from training. “Total pros,” said Tamika. “We are loving the little moments, too.”
Whether it’s site visits, training, or outreach, everyone’s been on the move. With one week to go, team Stepping Up Da Hill is not slowing down.
It’s great to see the work our teams do every day. We’d love to see you join our efforts. Walk or donate and change lives today! Helping people take real steps toward a second chance requires all of us, moving together. Keep it up, teams. Every step counts.
