1. Preferred Name, Title, and How Many Years You’ve Worked with CIYJ?
Tamika Colbert, Assistant to Superintendent, Human Service Program Administrator, CIYJ Site Coordinator with Ohio Department of Youth Services. I have had the role of CIYJ Coordinator for 3 years but worked with CIYJ for 12 years.
2. What is the most challenging aspect of your role? What aspect is the most rewarding?
The most rewarding aspect of working with juveniles is the opportunity to witness their growth and development. When I see them overcome challenges and make significant changes, which can include seeing them gain confidence, improve their behavior and make positive choices, hoping to contribute to a better future for themselves and their communities, they will be returning too.
3. Looking back over the past two decades, what do you consider to be CIYJ’s most impactful contributions to the youth justice space?
CIYJ has been committed to providing resources to help assist and improve the conditions and confinement of facilities of the states that participate in CIYJ. The feedback from CIYJ, helps with the implementation of change for the betterment of the facility.
4. What inspired you to pursue a career dedicated to youth justice? I was inspired to pursue a career in youth justice unintentionally?
I applied for a job with the State, and it was for a position in Dietary to get my feet in the door. I was then promoted to File Clerk and that is where I was introduced to Performance-based Standards. Our facility being an open dorm allows us to communicate consistently with youth and staff. It also enhances the engagement of youth and staff. It builds rapports. I enjoy working with our youth. Regardless of the circumstances they are in now that does not determine their future.
