The Perspective offers a snapshot of how some of the California county juvenile probation departments are doing since the legislature shut down the state facilities in 2023. Data from the Center for Improving Youth Justice’s Performance-based Standards program compares data from seven facilities with like facilities across the country. Results show staff in the California facilities feel safe yet burned out, much like the rest of the country, and the young people feel safe and are getting helpful education and medical care – slightly more than in other facilities.
